"Best before" ist ein Stück über Schönheit und Schönheitsideale. Dem Phantasma immerwährender Jugendlichkeit und der Fetischisierung des Körpers arbeiten die plastische Chirurgie und die Bildmedien zu. Dadurch entsteht ein zweiter Körper oder besser ein körperloses Bild, das keine Erfahrung mehr zulässt und nur noch konsumiert werden kann. In dieser Kluft zwischen Bild und physischer Realität ist der Kampf um Schönheit ein Kampf um Wahrnehmungen, um Blicke auf die Körperoberfläche, also zunächst auf die Haut als das Organ, das die Grenze zwischen Körper und Außenwelt definiert. Die Haut scheint Fassade und Markenzeichen unserer Identität, doch als solche ist sie ständigen Interventionen und Manipulationen ausgesetzt: Sie ist Objekt und Medium von Metamorphosen, Maskierungen und Imitationen modischer Vorbilder, denen ihr Verfallsdatum schon eingeschrieben ist.

Tänzer und Performer mit unterschiedlichem biographischen Hintergrund stellen sich und dem Publikum zahlreiche Fragen: Gilt das Manipulierte, Künstliche, Gezüchtete oder das Natürliche, das Durchschnittliche oder das individuell Besondere als schön? Kann Schönheit auch ein Handicap sein, wie abhängig ist die Definition von Schönheit vom jeweiligen Kulturkreis und liegt Schönheit letztlich immer im Auge des Betrachters?

“Best Before:” A performance about beauty, artificiality and malleability of bodies, indulging in a dance of metamorphosis, masquerade and mimesis. The phantasm of eternal youth and the fetishization of the mediated body have distorted our perception of physical reality into a bodiless image, which can be shaped and moulded into perfection in order to be consumed. In this abyss between appearance and corporeal authenticity, the struggle to fulfil norms of beauty is a struggle to manipulate perceptions, to attain the glances onto our surface, the skin. Our organ of façade has become the representative brand of our identity, seen both as an object and medium for alterations, disguise, makeovers and imitations of fashionable icons and idols. But the constant interventions and manipulations it is faced with, already have the date of expiration carved into them.

Dancers and performers with various biographical bodies question, whether the manipulated, artificial, cultured or the natural, the average or the individually particular that is considered beautiful? Can beauty be a handicap, how culture specific is its definition and is beauty in the end always in the eye of the beholder?
